Remember the old joke – when’s a door not a door? The corny answer – when it’s a-jar.  It never was funny, but maybe that’s appropriate because if it’s a fire door, its correct installation, maintenance and use isn’t something to joke about. It really is a matter of life and death.

Fire Door Safety Week which runs from September 23rd to 29th is a campaign which aims to raise awareness about fire door usage. The target audience? Well, it’s everyone from building owners, building users and residents to every one of us who’s ever walked past a fire door and never given it a second thought. The message is clear – when fire doors are used correctly, they save lives.

This isn’t a campaign we can afford to ignore. It’s one that CHeSS is right behind and we’re doing our best to help spread the message. It sits alongside work we’re already doing educating architects and specifiers with the latest findings about fire doors from the Grenfell Inquiry.

It’s easy to get involved with  Fire Door Safety Week. The campaign’s website is packed with resources, tips, videos, guides and publicity materials and you can pledge your support online. Every new supporter is actively improving fire safety and it will take no more than a few minutes to sign up. Let us know when you’ve done it. Tell people you work with, your boss, your landlord, your followers and friends. Together, we can make a difference.
